Advantages of RA.. Contd..

I just realized few more advantages of RA…

Energized / Active life : Due to reduced weight and all the healthy food there is lot of energy now. We managed both our kids on our short vacation to a nearby beach very well.. played with them, swam with them, taking care of them full day for 3 days I don,t think I could have done that without help and without being tired even before my RA. So now we have quality and active family life.

You will not get fat even if we tried : This is so true on normal dieting scenarios we tend to give in to cravings and gain all the weight we lost due to dieting. But RA makes sure you don’t deviate even if you do you will be made aware of the reality pretty quickly and you will be forced to fall back to your diet routine. So this is a blessing in disguise it will force you to eat healthy else hello RA is just behind the corner to tumble your life.

Regular periods and controlled PCOS: Another crazy realization. I had PCOS and if I put on weight they tend be irregular and irregular periods use to cause more weight gain. This loop is now solved as with the healthy diet and controlled weight my periods are normal with no PCOS activity in picture. Hurrah !!

Healthy skin tone : With all the fruits that i’m eating and the green juices add low fat foods with no meat my skin looks fresh and healthy. Now no need of high parlor bills and hell lot of time and energy is saved.

Everything happens for a reason in life. As long as we are positive and in control all the negatives can made into our own positives.

Eat healthy.. Live happily 🙂

Consistency is the key to success….

Nothing in life comes easily.. there is a price for everything. These sayings are very true. I think RA made me philosophical :).

When everything was fine we start taking things for granted, same thing happened with my control of RA with diet. I was following my diet religiously, was going for random walks, there were no pains. Its almost like I did not have RA but I just spoiled it because of my love for food 😩 or lack of self control..

It started with multiple parties of friends and family and I did not want to stand out by not eating anything so I ate and then i should have restricted myself which I did not and gave in to temptation and ended up eating as my wish. Uff.. it just happened on multiple occasions in a month, my body said enough darling just because i’m accepting you cant stuff me with whatever you want.

Bang Bang !!! My RA is back with terrific knee pain and tiredness and pain in my shoulders. Now this is the key junction. A normal sane person would accept her mistake and get started on rectifying it but hellooo that’s not me! I was aggravated, confused and depressed (Sadguru once said we throw this word as an escape to everything… Hmm maybe). Here is the million dollar question, I’m still on my medication i.e. methotrexate , cortishot , folic acid etc etc and they are supposed to help me from pain but if I eat wrong it is showing up does that mean that they are not helping or my disease is progressing at a faster rate than visible hmm. these thoughts made me more miserable and I ate lot of crap. I usually end up eating a lot when my mind is not in the right place. And my RA is also showing up at the equal speed.

GOD bless my husband, he understood my self destruction phase and helped me back to normalcy. Now I’m back to normalcy i do have small bouts of pain, no one to blame than me and my tummy. Ii could have weaned off my medication by now if I was little more sensible 😩 .

Advantages of RA…

I know my heading sounds crazy and you may think I maybe insane to find advantages with a chronic illness, but believe me I’m going to give you the positives I learnt because of this dreadful disease:

Perception of life

Yes RA changes the way you see your life. Everything was so easy earlier we were very aggressive in planning with no respect for our bodies. Working late hours, stuffing our mouths with whatever we find and craving for materialistic things and taking everything for granted. But RA grounded us. Everything was turned upside down and our new motto is healthy life is happy life. We realized how we are spoiling our kids also with our unhealthy life style . Then tada everything changed we give more importance to nutritious less fatty food now. As a family it brought us together we are more emotionally attached than earlier. Now, family comes first everything else should follow it. Earlier public appearances are more important now our comfort and happiness is priority. We feel content now with very small things in life. Life seems vibrant and interesting as everyday is a challenge to be pain free, active and to make it worth.

“Let it go”

I’m usually stressed most of the time as I want to do everything 100% and I want to satisfy everyone and was easily bothered by others actions and comments. But now my motto is “Let it go” I’m not bothered by anything easily now even if I’m I’ll come out of it very soon not impacting me and my surroundings much. I now accept that perfection is not the criteria instead meeting the need is. No one is the better judge of me than myself so I’m not really bothered by others criticisms or concerned about what people may think with my food choices or lack thereof :P. I know what I can what I can’t. There is confidence andpeace in me now as my life is in my control and I’m the one in charge. I’m planning to get a tattoo of this saying so it will remind me to stick to it. Ha fingers crossed lets see :).

Healthy and active family

Our complete family food habits have changed now our full family is lean and energetic. We are now more attentive to kids as we are very energetic. Not only us but our friends are getting motivated with our life style and are trying to accommodate it to have a better life. We are now role models for weight loss and active life styles. Hurrah !!

Vast wardrobe choices

Funny but very true. With reduced weight and size we can wear anything and look good. No more feeling awkward about wearing t-shirts and showing bulging tummies. Choices of dresses in the shops are vast now :).

Increased PDA from hubby

Oooh this is my favorite of all. We do love each other and a happy couple but never were touchy feely in public. In fact you don’t see us together in any public gatherings. But now I don’t know which aspect gets the credit but we sit together , talk and looks like a cozy couple. People around us also are feeling the difference in our attitude so its obviously a change that I love.

I’m usually shy but now I don’t back down from a chance to dance in parties. I’m not a dancer but oh yeah I can move it :P.

Many more to come stay tuned

Path to phases of Remission…

In the last post I was cribbing about the foods I’m going to miss but here I’m going to give the details of food to eat and its advantages.

Self help:

Based on our Google search  we decide on not to eat dairy, animal products, sugars, white rice, Wheat flour, Maida, corn and very less oil. This left us very little options to eat even though pain is the motivator I could not stick to 2 to 3 options of food everyday and obviously I cant survive on juices so here came the magical food “Millets”. We read a lot about millets its our ancient Indian food which my grandmothers and grandfathers ate and are hale and healthy even in 80’s. So we started using these mainly bajra and jowar flour for roti, jowar ravva as upma , Ragi flour for dosa. Green tea instead of tea or coffee I’m used to it so I’m happy with it. I can say my pain was sustained it is not worsening I always have a feeling it is just waiting at the end of the corner but still not with me as of now.

Journey from size XL to size S (oh an interesting one here)…

Some morbid details about me I stand at a normal height of 5’7″ and I will blame all the steroid injections , tablets and my insatiable sweet tooth add laziness to it and I weigh a whooping 75 Kilos 😩 . As my heading says I’m somewhere between L and XL thanks to my height I don’t really look fat but just healthy and little chubby.

Because of the above food changes I lost 5kgs in a month… wow that’s a very drastic change earlier even after spending 2 hours in a gym everyday I did not  loose more than a kilo but here I lost so much even with not lifting a needle 😛 . But there was a nagging feeling in the back of my head that we are just flying as per the wind without any finite plan and I wanted to meet a nutritionist to give us a better suggestions. Unfortunately we don’t have any in Hyderabad who are familiar with RA so settled with one who at least understands what does RA entail. Here comes the magic.

First thing she said to me even before I opened my mouth was you need to loose at least 10 kilos. I was like what I just lost 5 kilos that’s pretty awesome and I don’t need to loose more. She was like baby you have more fat than you realize and you need to loose it if you want your immune system to work properly. That shut me up. Here comes the magical diet:

Morning 7 AM – 1 cup of warm water with 2 dates and dry figs

8 AM – 1 dosa with veggies or 2 Idly and black tea

10 AM – 1 fruit with sweet corn

1 PM – half cup rice (single polished) with veggies (No dal and No potatoes – carbs) – I did eat dal please I’m already so much food.

4 PM – fruits and black tea

7 PM – 1 dosa and vegetable stew (cook all pumpkin, veggies, greens included in water with salt and pepper) – this is an awesome food she asked me to add oil but I skipped it and dosa also I eat lots of veggies only.

9 PM – 2 badam 2 -walnuts -2 tea spoons of pumpkin seeds

I started loosing 1kg per week and tada I’m at 62 kg by 3 months and my dresses are now between ‘S’ and ‘XS’. I still have 2 kilos to loose but oh I’m enjoying my figure as of now. We still deviated here we used millets i.e., foxtails, ragi, little millet for dosa and idly I think that also helped me with my appetite and weight reduction. And for pain its almost not there and now I’m going for walk , running with my daughter and the biggest price my cortishot came down to 3mg per day from 6mg. I do have some painful days but better days are more than those :).. I do cheat sometimes and get lucky on some days and not so much on others so I’m more cautious and if I have to cheat i’ll do it only with the foods I like most will not do it for regular foods.

The major advantage of the above diet  is we got to know how to have a healthy filing and non oily breakfast I.e., dosas with veggies and with variety of dosas and pumpkin the filling food with no calories and with anti-inflammatory character
